Hitchhiking (lifting or thumbing) is a type of transport, in which the traveler tries to get a lift from another traveler in some vehicle e.g. boats, bus, car.

Hitch-hike a boat can be a task for some but can be done easily if you put your right effort in it and you can become the part of the crew. In the Caribbean it is not difficult to find sail boats on the deck. You can take a lot of time in finding a boat. Most of the boat-hitchers tried to stay at the harbor for a week and tried to convince almost every sailor in order to get a boat. Some offers a drink for sailors to impress them. People regularly get rides on boats in the San Francisco area by offering beers to the sailors.
Barges are extended flat boats that can carry thousands tons of merchandise, leisurely along the river. If you are not in a rush then they are easy to catch. Barges never stop if you try to stop them from the bank. The finest place to get to them is the place where they have to stop to get accustomed to the level of the river-canal that is “lock”. But they have generally limited access. They do not activate after mid night. The main gate is operated by a man and there is a button through which you can call the operator. They will let you in only if you explain to them who are you over the intercom. Traffic is low but the boat drivers generally don’t give permission to travellers during the needed time for the lock to operate, it is good to talk to them from the bank.
Hitchhiking is regularly safe. The most common feelings of unsafely are concerning to the driver’s driving style. Always carry your most precious stuff within your pocket like passport, wallet, money, mobile phone. This way you will keep these items with you in case you lost your bag.
