Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: African Safari Tour Travel Guide

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: African Safari Tour Travel Guide
Serengeti put simply is Tanzania’s most renowned National Park. It is the largest covering an area of 14,763 sq km of protected area and borders the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. Its far-reaching plains of endless grass, tinged with the twisted shadows of acacia trees, have made it the quintessential image of a wild and unblemished Africa. Its huge stone kopjes are home to rich ecosystems, and the sheer magnitude and scale of life that the plains support is staggering. Large prides of lions laze easily in the long grasses, plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trump to each other across the plains, and giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland, and the whole range of African wildlife is in awe-inspiring numbers.

The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara attract visitors from around the world, who flock to the open plains to witness the largest mass movement of land mammals in the world. Close to a million animals make the seasonal journey to fresh pasture to the north, then later to the south, after the biannual rains. The sound of their thundering hooves, raising massive clouds of thick red dust, has become one of the legends of the Serengeti plains. The entire ecosystem thrives from the annual migration, from the lions and birds of prey that gorge themselves on the weak and the faltering to the gamut of hungry crocodiles that lie in patient wait at each river crossing for their annual feed.

But it’s not just the wildebeest that use the Serengeti as a migratory pathway. The adjacent reserves of Maswa and Ikorongo, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as well as the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya all allow the animals and birds of the area a free range of movement to follow their seasonal migrations. Indeed, in the wake of the wildebeest migration, many of the less attention-grabbing features of the Serengeti are often overlooked. The park has varied zones in which each ecosystem is subtly different. Seronera in the centre of the park is the most popular and most easily visited area. The Grumeti River in the Western Corridor is the location for the dramatic river crossing during the wildebeest migration. Maswa Game Reserve to the south offers a remote part of the park rewarding in its game-viewing and privacy, and Lobo near the Kenyan border offers a change to see plentiful game during the dry season.

Aside from traditional vehicle bound safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become a safari rite-of-passage for travel enthusiasts. The flights depart at dawn over the plains and take passengers close over the awakening herds of wildebeest and zebra, gazelle and giraffe. The extra altitude allows guests to witness the striking stretches of plains punctuated only by kopjes. Up in the sky, you have Africa all to yourself.

GL1800:New Front Brake Pads Fitted at 26k
Thursday, after completing my "Honey-Do's", I decided to install a fresh set of Front Brake Pads before heading out for a ride on this fine FlatLand day.

The OEM Brake Pads have done a great job hauling this big-o-girl to a stop, but it was time for a new set and what Lady doesn't like a new pair of shoes, or two?

CIMG4417

Fitting new front brake pads takes just a few minutes to complete, while uncovering the calipers takes a few minutes as well.

I procured the two sets of brake pads from WingStuff.com when I place orders for other items.

WingStuff.com applies discounts and free shipping when your order is a certain dollar amount. So to clear the dollar amount, I'll add a set of pads to the order, which actually reduces the overall costs of the order once shipping is free.

I'm also a V.I.P. Member at WingStuff.com and receive further discounts through the program.

Vistas of American Waterfronts - IV

Vistas of American Waterfronts - IV
Here is another set of waterfront pictures from my travels in the US. I really admire one facet of this new nation is that they spend enormous amounts of money in maintaining and protecting natural resources. Creeks, springs, rivers are usually not encroached upon, this facilitates natural water percolation along its original paths. Large dams/ lakes/ reservoirs have been constructed to facilitate storage of water. It is amazing to know that pretty much the entire west coast of the US is fed by one river which is known as Colorado, Trinity and Rio Grande as it passes through different parts of the country. In this blog I will try to give some vistas of this mighty river.

Wednesday, 7 am. Registration for RWA National.  Volunteers distributed badges, nametags, ribbons, schedules, and books!  Along with 5 paperbacks and a hardcover, we received a flash drive from Harlequin that holds conference handouts, a 14-page pdf file of Harlequin covers from 1949-2009, and 3 more complete books.  Cool!  At registration, I saw some old friends and met a few new fellow writers.  Some will sightsee today.  Some will be busy with board matters or other events.  Today is Librarians’ Day and the Chapter Leadership Event.

After a pleasant breakfast at the Stone’s Throw Washington DC 2009 RWA 079 Restaurant in the Marriott, my husband and I left for the Metro and more touring.  Out the back service door, down the hill, then across 24th Street and we were at the entrance.  We bought our fare cards and were carried down, and down, and down the escalators.  Mind the GapThe last time I rode the subway (aka/underground or tube) was in London a few years ago.  While Washington’s system is just as efficient, I sorta missed the sultry British voice reminding me to “Mind the Gap” as I stepped aboard.

The Library of Congress was our first destination.  Washington DC 2009 RWA 054My goal was some genealogy research and learning how the system works.  Before accessing books, I had to register for a Reader Card in the Madison Building of the Library, then walk back through the tunnel to the Jefferson Building.  Interesting.  The Jefferson Building is gorgeous, inside and out.  The intricate paintings and carvings on the ceilings are awe-inspiring.

Early afternoon we hopped back on the Metro for a quick ride to the “Federal Triangle” and a visit to the National Museum of American History.  The exhibit honoring the First Ladies held a special appeal, from Mary Todd Lincolns’ tiny waisted gown worn in 1861 to Jacqueline Kennedy’s classic pale sheath a hundred years later.  So much to see in Washington, D.C.!

When we returned to the hotel it seemed it had made a shift from teachers to writers.  A quick change and I was downstairs for the “Readers for Life Literacy Autographing.” Five hundred romance authors lined up at tables to sign, and at least triple that number looking to meet their favorites make a lasting impression.  Washington DC 2009 RWA 084

Last year I posted a photo of an immature green seed pod on one of our Royal Poinciana trees. The immature seed pods are green and soft, but as they ripen, they become brown and hard. Today's photo shows a mature Royal Poinciana seed pod.

Eventually the pods will drop from the trees onto the ground, unless they are removed ahead of time. If you pick up and shake one of these mature seed pods, you will hear the seeds inside rattle against the hard shell of the pod. The seed pods are are between 12 and 18 inches long (about 30 to 45 cm). Seed pods like this are characteristic of trees in this family (Fabaceae). [Click on the photo to enlarge.]

Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT)
Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) is the budget airline terminal for Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

LCCT is on the other side of the runway of KLIA, so you can't walk between the two terminals. There is a shuttle bus that connects KLIA and LCCT if you intend to transfer to a low cost airline.
